Excuse me, you dropped your purpose
Wouldn’t it be great if it happened like that? If your “thing” – that thing you’re looking for, to make you feel the way you want to feel, all day long – just fell out of your back pocket like a crumpled dollar bill? And someone could hand it to you?
That’s how it worked for me. Or so I thought.
At age 21, life practically handed me a dream job in Hollywood, managing my favorite bands. As it turned out, what life really handed me was a one-way ticket to Doucheville: way too much access to parties, an insatiable ego, 5 different alarms just to get out of bed in the morning, and a monster cocaine habit.
And of course, I lost it all.
No, not the cocaine habit. (That came later, and not so easily.) But the job and the ego trip, buh-bye. Un- employed, lost, and afflicted with gout (yes, gout), I found myself living in an 8×8 pool house, praying for guidance, and strapping on a geriatric circulation boot. Sexy.
I don’t want to spoil what happens next for me, but here’s a preview of what might happen for you when you read it:
Thinking “If he can do it, I can do it.”
Turning fear into fuel.
Tuning out the “I suck” thoughts and creating a new story, which you make true just by doing something new.
Creating space for the life you want to live and the feelings you want to feel. Even thought it might mean giving up the company paycheck and the health insurance. Or bringing home moo shu and lo mein instead of cooking family dinner. (No, you’re not a bad parent.)
Taking little actions, making those a habit, and building them into something big… Instead of layering on more yoga and therapy and green juice and Om and affirmations and self-help and waiting for it all to take effect.
Finding your “thing.”
It’s not in your back pocket, but maybe it’s in this book. Which is one step away from being in your hot little hands.
